
Cama’s industry knowhow and technological capabilities match 100% of customer demands with tailored, best-fit secondary packaging solution
Thanks to the depth and breadth of its multi-industry application knowledge, Cama has been able to satisfy the unique demands of a leading pharmaceutical company that wanted to exploit a specific, specialised approach to its secondary packaging processes.
Proving that engineers should never settle for second best or opt for solutions that just ‘nearly do’ what they want, Cama was able to create a packaging solution that precisely matched the customer’s brief and employed all the requested features, using technology- and knowhow-transfer from the other markets it so successfully serves.
Exploiting experience
According to Fabio Melli, Sales Engineer Manager at Cama, “The customer had limited space available for the new packaging machine and side-load packaging, commonly used in pharmaceuticals, was not feasible. Instead, we leveraged our extensive experience with top-loading machine technology, traditionally used in high-speed cartoning, and adapted it to meet the stringent requirements of the pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.” Additionally, the Cama engineering team had to consider a new packaging format that had been visualized, prototyped, and developed in collaboration with the customer. The box needed to be user-friendly while providing tamper-proof features, available in various sizes to meet the diverse global pharmaceutical market demands. The machine developed by Cama was designed to handle single stick packs—a growing trend in healthcare and pharmaceutical packaging. It also had to support full track and trace capabilities, leaflet/booklet dispensing and insertion, along with other pharmaceutical quality control measures. Beyond the standard regulations defined by CFR21, the customer had additional requirements, including the capability to simulate errors to optimize throughput, allowing for easier error detection, prevention of issue propagation, and elimination of risks like short counts and contamination.
“We faced a substantial challenge,” Melli explains. “Not only did we have to accommodate the machine within a small footprint, but we also needed to adapt our technology to the new box format, while managing an infeed of over 500 pieces per minute from the bagging machine, adding traceability, and leafleting.”
Flexible, future-proof design
Cama’s solution involved deploying its in-house-developed robotic technology to gently pick up stick packs and load them into boxes according to product counts dictated by the box size and batch parameters, which included flexibility for future variations in products and packaging dimensions. The pick-and-place operations for the products are augmented by robotic box forming and closing procedures. “Powder stick packs present a significant challenge,” Melli notes. “They are quite small, only 80 mm long and 22 mm wide, containing about five or six grams of powder. We had to consider this when packaging them in arrays of eight to fifty per box. During operation, the bagging machine discharges ten pieces per cycle, arranging them in a line on a 600 mm wide FDA-compliant smart transport conveyor belt. The Cama machine then uses advanced vision systems to identify their positions on the belt before guiding the robots to pick up and orientate them according to the requested packaging style.”
Setting global standards

“We have extensive experience in applications of this nature,” Melli continues, “due to our widespread deployment in other markets, where our new-generation machine portfolio sets the standard for flexibility and efficiency. We offered the customer several models to develop this new pharma technology, giving them a variety of core operating principles to choose from. Thanks to our tightly integrated robotic technology and advanced vision systems, the customer received precisely what it needed, with added flexibility to adapt the machine for future output and packaging format demands.”
“Side loading could be easier and faster for this type of application,” Melli admits, “and is typically what other machine suppliers might offer, often pushing this technology due to their limited machine portfolios. However, side loading would not have met all of the customer’s requirements, particularly regarding easy open and reclose boxes. Our top-loading solution, on the other hand, addressed all the customer’s needs. Indeed, the customer chose our solution over existing technologies in its workshop. The consensus was that while side loading might be faster, it was not the optimum solution for their needs.”
